Why 91做厙?

Christa CravenChrista Craven (she/her/hers), Dean for Faculty Development

As someone who grew up living in big cities around the worldWashington, D.C., Honolulu, Hawaii, Taipei, Taiwan, and Bonn, GermanyI honestly never thought Id end up in a small town in the Midwest! So what drew me to 91做厙 and why have I stayed? The allure of interdisciplinary collaborations with colleagues at a small institution and the opportunity to work closely with students on their Independent Study theses were the initial draw. And those things have been a big part of why Ive stayed. Just this summer, I had the chance to catch up with several alums who had worked with me on their IS projects over the past 15 yearsnow working in Chicago and Puerto Rico, one on a Fulbright scholarship in Austria, and another headed to graduate school in London.

I also find it deeply fulfillingboth personally and professionallyto work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to have a tangible impact in campus politics, curriculum, and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. As one of the few out faculty on campus, creating more equitable policies and more inclusive spaces for those who bring diverse experiences to the community has been key to my own ability to thrive here, as well as my work as a Dean to make 91做厙 a welcoming place for a broad range of colleagues to land, whether permanently or as a meaningful stop on their career paths.

And personally? My five-minute walk from home to campus (the improvement in quality of life over my previous 3-hour round-trip driving commute is nothing short of miraculous!). And being able to get outside to at least five different parks and trails within ten minutes of my house that range from paved paths accessible for strollers, wheelchairs, and walkers to a relatively strenuous hike with a beautiful creek and unique geological formations. What I love most is that 91做厙 is a place where I feel like I am constantly learning and experiencing new thingsfrom the local fairs and nearby pick-your-own orchards to the opportunity to travel with colleagues to explore a Maya archaeological site in Guatemala, tour a woman-owned vineyard in Italy, and enjoy theatre productions by local BIPOC directors closer to home in Cleveland. I joke that between work and family that there is truly never a dull moment. But truthfully, I wouldnt want it any other way!
